The Drowning is a short remix - with a new sound design - of an earlier work "MO-SO," an EMPAC DANCE MOViES Commission 2009-2010, supported by the Jaffe Fund for Experimental Media and Performing Arts, Experimental Media and Performing Arts, Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY.
The mysteries of cognition and the human ability to think in metaphor have become frequent themes in my work. In “The Drowning,” I wanted to explore the impressions running through a man’s mind in the moments before his death: the sensation of time slowing down, of heightened bodily perceptions, and the simultaneous unreeling of an internal cinema of images -- seemingly unrelated – that create an unconscious narrative of personal history and emotion. The story in his head changes in the last seconds as the oxygen-deprived brain starts shutting down, speeding faster and faster, turning into a surreal, psychedelic collage of colors and primary symbols, the foundations of learned experience reduced to their individual blocks of information, electrified and dispersing like split atoms or dying stars.

DEC 21 2010 AKAI MPK mini USB Controller Packs Keys, Pads, Knobs Into 13″, One Pound
If you could only pack one controller in your backpack, and weight, size, and cost were at an absolute premium, the Akai MPK mini would be tough to beat. The latest salvo in the ultra-compact controller wars, Akai has taken the keyboard, pad controllers, and encoders from its LPK25 and LPD8 and packed them into one device. Specs:
25 keys
8 backlit drum pads, which can access two banks for a total of 16 triggers
MIDI Over USB
Weight is “just over a pound” (specs list it as two pounds, shipping 2.5, but I believe the unit itself is lighter; confirming)
It’s driver-free, USB class-compliant, so should work not only with Mac, Windows, and Linux, but also iPad via the USB Camera Connection Kit. I’m verifying the compatibility of the latter, even if unofficial. (I’m also keeping my fingers crossed that eventually other tablets could follow suit.)
Also nice, as on the other Akai units, is a built-in arpeggiator and a fair number of dedicated and assignable controls. Now, I’ll be honest; I’d still love to see someone make a high-end, ultra-compact unit for those who are willing to spend some extra cash (and weight) on feel. And you’ll want to look around at other options if you want MIDI DIN output for connecting to hardware. But as a bargain, this is quite a deal: street price is projected at just US$100.

After spending a long night in a dark, creepy warehouse full of mannequins, and many hours of spare time in front of your computer, this is what you get!
In this piece we’ve combined two of our interests, creative visuals and electro music, to create a music video for the up-and-coming Swedish artist Mille. The idea was to use projections on mannequins to achieve a different and interesting expression where graphics almost become clothes on the bodies.
To be able to do this we got some help from a couple of friends - David Einar behind the camera and Transfett who did the live sync of visuals onto mannequins, thanks guys! Awesome work.

Alguses Oli - Trailer
Alguses Oli - Trailer from Emer Värk on Vimeo.
„In Principio...“ is based on Arvo Pärts works „In principio“ and „Miserere“ and merges the sacred intimacy of music with powerful visual meditation. This production that searches for conciliation between the eternal opposition of the biggest and the smallest, the highest and the lowest in the cosmos is based on the divine logic of the Mandelbrot equation and the holy geometry. „In Principio“ is a pilgrimage of all the senses into the sacred space inside the human heart and at the end of this journey we will be forced to join the writer Miguel de Unamuno in acknowledging that:
The road that leads us to the living God, the God of the heart, and that leads us back to Him when we have left Him for the lifeless God of logic, is the road of faith, not of rational or mathematical conviction.

This sculpture is made of four tetrahedron, each embodying a dimension : the three spatials coordinates at the bottom and time at the top. The meeting of the three spatials coordinates is locating the happening, whereas time will make it exist in pure present : nowness as the infinitesimal moment. Here and now takes place the gathering, the great celebration of your rebirth as a spiritual entity in cosmic union with other beings. Get rid of your illusions.

Memorsion - a urban maze of video projections
Memorsion - a urban maze of video projections from Manuel Chantre on Vimeo.
Memorsion is an three-dimensional audiovisual experience made up of twenty cloth canvases assembled to create a unique maze of video projections.
Images of urban structures, vast concrete spaces, abandoned buildings and spray-painted walls are displayed and transformed. Forgotten spaces, either out of service or altered by time, are arranged and assembled within the installation, carving out a new singular environment.
The public, by moving within the environment, modifies the video content displayed: the experience becomes different from one visit to another.
Videos are also used to sculpt the exhibition space. The use of multiple screens and it’s resulting effects, is somewhat akin to the 2D multilayer technique, however these moving images are projected and perceived in a tridimensional environment, allowing them to be seen and felt from different vanishing points.

New midi controllers
Midi-Fighter
Who says music can’t be button mashing? The 4×4 Midi-Fighter matrix is a perfect first DIY controller project – it’s easy to assemble, easy to customize, and gives you satisfying-feeling arcade buttons. There are great pre-mappings if you DJ with tools like Traktor, or you could easily adapt them to Ableton, Renoise, Maschine, and other tools.
Akai LPK-25
Ultra-compact keyboards on the go or in tight spaces are fantastic, and the LPK-25 from Akai might just have the edge. Derek Morton writes: “I know I am bit of an eccentric gear-oholic. I tend to favor instruments or software that is a bit different, innovative or just helpful in some way. This little cheap USB midi keyboard controller is not the perfect controller by any means. It lacks pitch and mod wheels and the keys are quite tiny which makes it difficult to perform anything complex. THE BIG HOWEVER is… this little guy has a super fun built-in arpeggiator and latch. Bring up a drum machine instrument or samples and the fun begins here! I don’t know any MIDI Key controllers that have this feature. You can spend upwards of a half of a grand on ultra-programmable controllers that have knobs, dials, faders and LCD readouts without a basic arpeggiator.”
Alternatively, consider the Korg nanoSERIES microKEY — as reader Greg puts it, “So I can do some sequencing at Starbucks.” Just try not to spill your Gingerbread Spice Latte on it, okay?
Now, it doesn’t have a MIDI DIN port, which brings us to…
Rock Band 3 Wireless Keyboard

rockband.com/games/rb3
US$130 street with Rock Band 3 game, $80 for just the keyboard
A keytar for a game may not seem a serious music tool, but make no mistake about it. The Rock Band 3 keyboard works with hardware using standard MIDI DIN output, has a great-feeling keybed for the price, and finally gives you a “keytar” that’s light, ultra-compact, portable, and battery-powered. As a mini keytar, it’s unparalleled. (No word yet on using its wireless Bluetooth features, as works with the Xbox.) Bonus: get the game for fun, and discover something you can actually practice with. That means a serious tool that a musician might game with casually, or a serious game accessory that might convince your friend/family member to explore music production.

NOTA BENE Visual - Pera Palace Hotel, Grand Opening
October the 29th, 2010
Pera Palace Hotel celebrates its opening night and 87th republic day of Turkey within an architectural
video projection mapping show. The project's concept is based on two parts, abstract and historical,
and all of the visuals are prepared by NOTA BENE Visual. Through the show, spectators can come
across surprisingly to be captivated from colorful gleaming light beams, illusions and abstract effects.
Istanbul resident and Levantine architect Alexander Vallaury designed the hotel in neo-classical,
art nouveau and oriental styles, giving Pera Palace its timeless, refined look.
Pera Palace Hotel, was home to many firsts. Apart from the Ottoman Palaces, it was the first building to have electricity as well as the first electric elevator. British writer Daniel Farson described the elevator in these words: “It is the most beautiful elevator in the world made of cast iron and wood... It ascends like a lady who curtsies. Tourists can not take their eyes off this utterly pretty and aristocrat elevator.” Bathrooms that provided the only running hot water in the city were also privileges exclusive to Pera Palace Hotel guests. Tall spacious rooms lit by magnificent chandeliers were host to many unforgettable tea and dance parties.
Pera Palace Hotel, a significant prominent symbol of Istanbul's urban culture for over a hundred years, was also witness to many historical events such as World War I, the Occupation of Istanbul, the Turkish War of Independence, the founding of the Turkish Republic and World War II.

This comes just days after the release of a TUIO library for Kinect, which helps the open source Kinect project to speak the lingua franca of today’s connected visual software, OpenSoundControl (which is open and provides control but doesn’t have to do sound).
It does make me wonder: will you soon be able to earn extra cred doing a visual performance entirely with faders and knobs? (Oldskool, baby!) In fact, let’s do it: anyone care to submit to Create Digital Motion the most impressive use of knobs and/or old-fashioned arcade control? Defend that joystick from the onslaught of this new-fangled Kinect nonsense!

three images of laughter
three images of laughter from Yan Da on Vimeo.
This is a digital performance based on music from Qigang Chen's San Xiao (三笑)
Three performers try to embody a musical, visual and physical interpretation to the same piece of music in three different ways: playing a double cello, painting on a plexiglass and conducting with body movement. These improvisational gestures would further affect each other performer’s digital double—their images being live captured as separate videos, which are then projected as an integrated scene onto a screen facing the performers and the audience.
In the screen world, there are three frames declaring each performer’s territory. Their gestures will reveal and change their own and each other’s visual appearance on the screen. They can easily across borders whether in the virtual screen or in the physical space.
As the progress goes on, they continue this interference by switching each other’s performance in the physical space, they also invite the audience to enter their physical and virtual territory. This interference also triggers the music and virtual visual world into chaos. During the finale, everything is back to the original.
Each performer has his or her own product as the result: a painting, a double cello impromptu and a digital performance system designed by the third performer, the “conductor” that is me using Max/msp/jitter.
San Xiao is a contemporary musical composition for 4 traditional Chinese instruments, written by Qigang Chen. The name and the context of the music could be translated as three images of laughter, which has different references in Chinese historical context. One of them referred images of laughter as different attitudes or gestures embodied in their understanding of life. The other reference is a typical theme in Chinese painting about three friends having a joyful conversation in deep mountains. Here I’m not trying to directly translate the context of the music, but to explore the topic of interaction, dialogue and digital double through the performance and digital system design.

Modul8 - introduction to the 'Two Way Midi' module from Udart (Vibeke Bertelsen) on Vimeo.
This module for the VJ software Modul8 provides midi feedback for your physical midi controller device. The purpose is to avoid values jumping when you touch the dials on the device. Whenever a value is changed in Module 8 it is sent by MIDI to your device. This functionality only works if your midi device is able to receive midi and update it's values from that. Compatiple devices include Novation products and the Behringer BCF2000. More info and documentation at udart.dk/category/software

Raquel Meyers (Cartagena, 1977) is a Spanish video artist, often using low-res graphics to create surreal imagery and eerie atmospheres. She has made video clips and VJ sets for many of the more prominent 8-bit musicians (Glomag, Bubblyfish, Goto80) and also worked with electro and noise acts such as Rubeck and Tubular Balls. Meyers was formerly part of Entter (2000-2007), and has worked with print design, installations, and websites. She is perhaps one of the more consistent pixel artists, although she is currently exploring other expressions to create confusion and delight.

Goto80 (Anders Carlsson, 1981) is a musician and writer who grew up in the computer demoscene – probably the first transnational digital subculture for audiovisual hacking. He started with technical 8-bit musical explorations in 1995, with an unhealthy obsession of variation and errors. He gained reputation as one of the more progressive composers of chipmusic. He was one of 3 nominees for all-time best C64-composers at Commodore’s 25-year anniversary. After nearly 1000 songs and 200 performances, he currently experiments with more conceptual works, often based in his research on 8-bit art and culture as part of an MS-degree in Media and Communication. He has presented his work at Montevideo (nl), Cimatics (be), Mapping (ch), Piksel (no), HAIP (si), LABoral (es), Plaza Plus (nl), Radiator (uk), re:new (dk), SXSE (us), Blip Festival (us).
