"Ghosts of Lunches seems a silly title -- but it has a reason. We see ghosts all the time, in photographs, on television and anywhere where recordings of departed people can be found. Some cultures find recordings of dead people offensive. In our own culture the philosopher Jacques Derrida coined a term 'hauntology' for those presences that still impact on our thinking, simply by being replayed from stored media.

In general both spectral and electronic ghosts 'live' mundane non-existences. They float up and down stairs, tap on walls and in the case of photographs tend to be captured uncomfortably staring at the camera seated at the dinner table. Most of the ghosts I have seen are ghosts at lunch.

Late last year I inherited family photographs going back to the mid 1800's. There being so many I decided the only way to manage was to scan them and keep only the important pieces.
Nearly 7000 scans later I realized the crazy task I'd taken on and was very grateful for the Picassa management software I used to organise the tidal wave of images. Picassa has face recognition; once you've identified Aunty Mary, it will try to find her in every photograph. More interesting were all the incidental people -- in the background, standing nearby, or just too far removed to say who they might be. I decided to categorize them as one person I called 'Everyone'.

The most prominent feature of the audio is an inharmonic note cluster which sounds like a forlorn cry. That's mostly due to the pitch of the notes descending over the duration forming the shape, but also the formant, vocal texture of the sound that's played. It was originally a larger spread of notes, which I sculpted down to make the shape that best expressed my idea -- an electronic banshee, a ghostly woman that cries out on the eve of the death of an important person.

This 2011 version starts with a stuttering, clicking and thumping sound that sets a sense of urgency. The stuttering keeps it from being soothing like a ticking clock. Soon after comes a sample of old phonograph music that repeats two and a half times each few bars. The tonality of the old record gives a sense of history. The half bar interruption has two main uses, adding some swing to the pacing of the music and building on the general feeling of uneasiness."

In its third edition, Skyway ’11 draws the analogy between the richness of the experience that light based art delivers and wonders of the world opened up through our understanding of the Elements of the Universe.
The classical four elements – Earth, Water, Air, and Fire – are common to many philosophical traditions around the world and form powerful metaphors of forces fundamental to life on Earth. In the imagination of culture, where pagan traces never are totally dissolved, these elements refer to ancient beliefs inspired by the observation of natural phenomena.
In Western classical thought, there has been a strong conviction of the existence of four elements Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. A fifth element is at times added. The Greeks called it Aether. Following Aristotle’s reasoning that fire, earth, air, and water were earthly and did not provide an exact explanation for all phenomenon happening in the heavenly regions. The stars cannot be made out of any of the four elements and must therefore be made of a different, unchangeable, heavenly substance. So it is this Aether idea that links us to the Cosmos. For contemporary scientific community Aether serves as a touchstone for discussions. For us it’s an inspiring metaphor for cultural production.
The relationship with more scientifically founded categories can be probed deeper. Even today, Earth, Water, Air, and Fire are everyday symbols for the states of matter such as solid, liquid, gas. While empirical Science has arrived at new conceptions, in the field of Belief or in certain Physics tendencies these elements are still important today as a poignant metaphor for the oneness of everything.
Skyway’s 2011 artistic programme once again celebrates Human imagination in a world which is becoming more and more infinite but also more and more proximate to our reasoning, by means of contemporary science, namely astronomy, astrophysics, astrobiology. Since the stars are closer and in reaching for them again we want to understand also our own fundamental “elements” – forces and interactions ruling inside us. And of course that even if the “five elements world” is far from current knowledge about the Universe, still it can be a great contribution to an open discussion about our role in this “cold place” we used to call Cosmos.

CoGe 1.2.1 just released a few moments ago, with some performance-, rendering- and other minor and misc fixes – see the complete changelog on the download site. Thanks for all people reported those issues by sending reports or posting to the forum!

This version also extends the functionality of CoGe with two little but fancy new features:

Text File Playback

Some weeks ago I made a very little plugin for Quartz ComposerCoGeTextFileReader, which can read and divide a plain text file to subdivisions – separated by the space characters. This plugin now bundled with CoGe, so you can playback plain text files in the app, and also made aPlayer Module for that to read a new part of the text file on every beat. From now .txt files also handled with APS.

Showing up font-look with the fontName parameter

Some of the effect of CoGe has a fontName parameter, where you can select the font used to rendering text. This is cool, but before CoGe 1.2.1, you just saw the name of the font, which is not really useful in many cases, so CoGe 1.2.1 draws title cells of the fontName parameter pop-up with the font it represents. Take a look at the screenshot, much better, isn’t it?

How to make images and video move to the beat in Modul8.
These are the modules I'm using:
- (at) BPM (Global) by Andy Teasdale (I use this one instead of the default BPM (Global) module from Garagecube).
- BPM Router (layer)
I think I made up the fact that Andy Teasdale lives in London, sorry about that.
A repeated question is how long the video clip should be. I use clips between 2-8 seconds. You have to test how your clip will work with the kind of music you are performing to. You might want to have the option to make it both fast and slow. If the clip is too short it will get really choppy when you play it slow (4/1 beat). And if you make it too long you might have problem making it fast enough for your fastest speeds (1/4 & 1/8 beat). If you normally perform to a certain kind of music it could be an idea to cut your clip to that kind of music to get the feeling for the right length.
I use the Photo JPG codec at 75% quality for my video clips.

In 1666, Sir Isaac Newton conducted a famous experiment that has been widely considered as a landmark discovery in the study of optics and color theory. Inspired by this discovery, PRISMA 1666 is an interactive light installation consisting of 15 triangular crystal blocks distributed randomly on a clean white surface. The projection of colorful graphics is refracted and dispersed by these crystal blocks, creating a fascinating visual experience and ambiance. The installation enables interaction with the projected colors, angles, and shapes through a touch interface, creating an opportunity to experiment with these elements like Isaac Newton did so many years before us.
The installation is a collaboration between Wonwei and Shanghai-based design studio Super Nature Design. It was first exhibited at the 2011 International Science and Art Exhibition in Shanghai where it received the Best Creative Design Award.

No SFX, no post production, no cuts, everything you see here is 100% for real.We were funded by the Video Store of PlayStation® Store (http://www.greatfilmsfillrooms.com) to make a series of movie related videos using 'Immersive Imaging' which takes 3D projection mapping as its starting point, but gives the viewer a supercharged experience with the help of the PlayStation Move controller.In the past, projection mapping worked only from a single, static view point, and thus was very limited. By attaching the PlayStation Move to the camera, we can track projections to screens in real time, enhancing the effect of spatial deformation and false perspective on the projections and allowing viewers to look round (virtual) corners, bend walls, create a hole in the wall, or remove the walls altogether to reveal vast expanses of virtual worlds.

We set out to create a one of a kind public art experience, a projection mapping installation for multiple surfaces and multiple dimensions. With a hand picked team of artists and sponsorship by Senovva, something incredible emerged.
Unfolding like an animated modern Botticelli painting, flowing above our heads and spreading outwards
in every direction, “As Above, So Below” immersed viewers in the architecture of the Manhattan Bridge. Audiences physically entered the story and explored the shimmering surface as it ignited with messages and symbols.
This originally conceived video mapping project was a challenge offered to a group of artists from varying backgrounds. Led by digital arts pioneers Farkas Fulop and Ryan Uzilevsky, with post production support by Sina Taherkhani, the group created a one-of-a-kind experience. Adding to the fun were Artists Simon Anaya, John Parker, Richard Jochum and Johnny Moreno. The final projection utilized over 25,000 square feet of architectural canvas, and ultimately won "Best In Show" at the Dumbo Arts Festival.
This production tested every technique in image-making conceivable in the short time frame, including stop motion animation, and the suspension of over twenty performance artists from fly wires at sixteen feet off the ground.
Leo Kuelb is responsible for securing the site and bringing the original team together. He also put together a great international video art showcase between screenings of "As Above, So Below."

I just made a little new plugin for Quartz Composer with the nameCoGeTextFileReader.

Nothing fancy or magically inside the plugin, it just builds an indexed structure from a .txt file, by dividing the text to components separated by the space characters.

Just before a few days of NYE, tons of NYE related content taken recently, you know countdowns, fireworks and other stuff. That files mostly video loops, and I just got the idea why not creating this by Quartz Composer and make it re-usable every year. I’ve got a little free time in the past days and just made a little countdown in Quartz Composer, andI want to share with you. It should working in any Quartz Composer hosts, but I think the best way is using it with CoGe

Well, see what this composition does, and what you can set up:

you can set up the destination year
you can set up the message that will be displays when the new year reached
you can set up the font and font size displays the countdown and the color as well
the composition has some basic position and rotate controls
this composition will displays to seconds remains till the destination year
