Melting Pot

"Melting Pot" is a radical film metaphor that calls into question the effect promoting America as a "cultural melting pot" may have on integration.
Shot on 16mm color reversal film, Melting Pot poetically juxtaposes the "tossed salad" heterogeneous multiculturalism scenario, and the "melting pot" homogeneous racial mixture multiculturalism scenario. Colored oils are shown cohabiting separately in a trey, and the resulting moving mosaic represents the same beauty as of a birds eye view of a busy area in a multicultural community. When the colors are mixed together as they would be in a real melting pot, they are shown unbalanced. The climactic end of the film displays a beautiful swirl of many colors mixed together in the dish, projected onto the screen as a colorless blob. None of the color's that had shown through individually transmit their unique light.
