Here is a grid I designed in Quartz Composer with examples of the different patterns I programmed. The grid has different color presets, and you can change the speed, length of the trails, and much more. You can link these different aspects to react to sound, or to a midi controller.

This is raw footage, so the possibilities of mixing this and adding effects are endless.
