Video Mapping with Telenoika
June 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 | 15:00 – 18:00 | Classroom 2
[€ 150 ] REGISTER !!Only 3 places left!!
Four days to learn everything related to Video Mapping techniques, from the project idea to the final realization.
Technical study, optical, video projectors, lux, blueprint, 2d, 3d, music and sound effects
Taught by VJ Eletroiman, member of the Telenoika Community.
After a painstaking measurement process, we construct detailed 2D and 3D models of the target surface. We then generate the audio and video content, using these models to “map” the content onto the finest details of the specific site. This allows us to visually alter the appearance of the architecture – by controlling light, colour and surface volume – to change its very nature and transform the way it’s perceived.

Resolume Arena 6
June 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 | 18:00 – 21:00 | Classroom 2
[€ 150 ] REGISTER
The Resolume Arena 6 workshop introduces to the participants the use of the new released version of the Resolume Arena Media Server software, the most used tool for managing audio visual content at performances, stages, interactive installations. Starting with a basic interface explanation, you will progressively get to learn all the features of the software and get professional suggestions to use Resolume Arena 6 at its best. You will also get a deep review of all the new features that this new version brings with. During the workshop you will be asked to practice and try by yourself what you are learning. The next step of the class will be focused on the Advance Output including the video mapping and LED mapping techniques using Resolume Arena 6. At the end of the workshop, the participants will be also encouraged to experiment a video mapping on an “object” of their choice. Participants will be required to bring their own laptop, computer cables for connecting the projector and pc/laptop, and possibly their own projector (if they have one). They may also bring any hardware controller. To bring their own video footage for projection is not required, but welcome.

Live Coding with Max&Ableton
June 7 - 8 | 15:00 – 18:00 | Classroom 3
[€ 80 ] REGISTER
The worksop will be focusing on various techniques inside Max, Max for Live and Live that represent the basis of my audiovisual compositional practice and can be easily extended to performance. These techniques are anchored around a conceptual node that could be called “in-betweenness” – being in-between very opposite compositional practices such as indeterminacy, randomness or probabilities on one hand and planning, total control or repetition on the other. In other words I am influenced by techniques that span from very experimental to very genre based and I will share with you how I bridge that gap using Max, Max for Live and Live. During the workshop we will create few simplified sequences from the LPM 2018 promo video.

Processing: Beginner’s guide to creative coding
June 9 - 10 | 15:00 - 17:00 | Classroom 3
[€ 60 Max 15 attendees ] REGISTER
Processing is an open-source, free computer language which was designed to create visual output. Plus, it is a perfect language to learn how to program.
This workshop introduces the basic concepts of coding, to afterwards focus on the creative possibilities of processing. After this workshop, each participant knows the fundamental principles of coding in processing, and has created an own small sketch.
No previous knowledge in programming is required. Participants should bring their own laptop with processing downloaded and unzipped (https://processing.org/download )

Isadora Workshop
June 7 - 8 | 18:00 - 21:00 | Classroom 3
[€ 80 ] REGISTER
Isadora’s creator and pioneering media artist Mark Coniglio will offer a two-day introductory workshop to Isadora – a software tool expressly designed to be used by artists that offers real-time interactive control of video in a way that goes beyond standard VJ software. During the first day, Coniglio will quickly cover the basics of importing, playing and layering media and show how to use the integrated projection mapping tool. The second day will be spent showing how to take interactive control of your media using MIDI devices and other sensors. Participants will all receive a free three-month license for the full version of Isadora so that they can continue to experiment with the program after the workshop ends.
Participants will need to bring a personal computer (Mac or PC). If you have a MIDI device like a Launchpad or Nanokontrol, please bring it along and so we can show you how to use it for real-time control.

Arduino for visual artists
June 9 - 10 | 17:00 - 21:00 | Classroom 3
[€ 120] REGISTER
In this intensive workshop Michal Mitro will introduce visual artists to the world of interactivity. Together you will (briefly) look at the history of interactive art and use of interactivity in visual and time-based arts followed by an exploration of several strategies on how to approach interactivity from both a conceptual and technological perspective. Participants will be guided through a hands-on project that directly demonstrates and teaches how simple interactive elements can be embedded into an artwork to create a meaningful piece.
Following on, participating artists will be introduced to the basics of simple analog electronics in order to directly utilise them in the project. All parts of the circuit will be connected together (no soldering required), to Arduino, and to LEDs embeded in grown borax crystals at which point ultrasonic proximity sensors will be introduced to create an interactive environment.

Stage LED Design

WAR ON DRUGS

WAR ON DRUGS from VJ RUBAS on Vimeo.

The Convention on Psychotropic Substances of 1971 is a United Nations treaty designed to control psychoactive drugs such as amphetamine-type stimulants, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and psychedelics signed in Vienna, Austria on 21 February 1971.

The war on drugs has been a failure that has ruined lives, filled prisons and cost a fortune. It started during the Nixon administration with the idea that, because drugs are bad for people, they should be difficult to obtain. As a result, it became a war on supply.

The prohibitions on drugs have also created perverse economic incentives that make combating drug producers and distributors extremely difficult. The high black-market price for illegal drugs has generated huge profits for the groups that produce and sell them

The Global Commission on Drug Policy released a report on June 2, 2011, alleging that "The War On Drugs Has Failed."

Duality is a real-time media performance exploring how minimalist techniques in sound and vision can allude to much broader concepts, such as the duality of the human experience.

The sounds come from granular processing sounds and a custom synthesizer I built within the visual programming language Max MSP. Everything was then arranged within Reason and performed with Ableton Live. The accompanying visuals were made with Jitter, openFrameworks and VDMX.

This was first performed live at Buster Mantis in London as part of my final project for my Programming for Artists II module on the MA Computational Arts Course at Goldsmiths University.

SINGULARITY NOW

"TALES FROM THE EVENT HORIZON

The 14th Athens Digital Arts Festival exploring the unknown future of the upcoming Technological Apocalypse through art, science and technology, presents you the theme of its next edition, under the theme “SINGULARITY NOW”.

This year for its annual date, ADAF, the most renowned festival for digital arts in Greece, will present its content in May, at a TBA location in the historic center of Athens. The festival attracts and presents works and artists from all over the world.

Event Horizon is the conceivable surface of a black hole, a place where gravity curves space-time so much, there is no escape, not even by light itself. Its core is the singularity, a zero point, where space and time are discontinued and is unknown what exactly happens further. A wormhole? Termination of everything? A new universe through a white hole?

When something enters the event horizon, all physics laws get distorted, while gravity becomes such, that inevitably reaches singularity and from there on...
Singularity is a notion that has different definitions in the various fields of science, nonetheless, it retains a common axis regarding its main idea. In mathematics, it is the point where a function or an equation degenerates or diverges toward infinity, changing its nature and thus becoming impossible to define. In physics, it is the core of a black hole as well as the state right before the Big Bang, the zero point of space and time where everything is compressed in zero dimensions and density is infinite. In mechanics, it is the calibration of a machine in a way that its behavior cannot be predicted and the physical variants involved are either not definite or infinite. In technology, it is a scenario where artificial intelligence surpasses humanity, the technological boom becomes infinite and the outcome is unpredictable.

Is evident that singularity as notion is associated with infinity, with the unknown, and the beginning of universes, both physical and conceptual, but how does it link to art and technology?

Every universe launches its existence in subject to time, while the perception of time is by birth connected to creation and technicality. In the Promethean myth, we can perceive as singularity the gesture of the maker to offer fire to the humankind, passing thusly the torch of knowledge to the creation and enabling it to create on its own. As a consequence comes torment for the creator, but also time emerges in the form of a circular punishment considered one of the first references to the circle of a clock. Additionally, fire, which symbolizes simultaneously both intellect and technicality, was the first medium for the development of all “tekhne”. Its arrival in humanity, signifies the beginning of consciousness, thus consequently the perception of time as well as the development of art (fine tehkne) and technology (the art of making) which resulted in civilization and culture, both means for recording time. In this way, technology and art as derivatives of singularity and instruments of time, have proclaimed the beginning of this world, but maybe also its very end.

Today, the further development of the promethean gift is slowly taking over the reins from its creator and “degenerates” tending to change its nature, holding us witness in an upcoming technological singularity, which can potentially get any form. The constant progress on robotics, AI, biotechnology, biomimicry, nanotechnology, quantum computing and space technology, is courting with the idea of surpassing humankind, constituting obvious for the spectator, that we have entered an “event horizon” where no one can predict what will follow.

Human-machine merger or enslave of humanity? Brain upload and immortality or cease of human species? Progression or Regression? Futurism or Archaism? Physics or Metaphysics? Utopia or Dystopia? Beginning or End?

Following to this realization, the International Festival for Digital Arts of Greece, Athens Digital Arts Festival, calls both the art world and the world of technology, in order to have works and achievements which outline, comment, foresee, or determine the upcoming singularity, the human role in this new era, the role and form of art and technology in it.

Will you tell us your tale from this event horizon…?
