ArKaos VJ3.5 Video Feedback

ArKaos VJ3.5 Video Feedback from Peter Tjeerdsma on Vimeo.

In 2003 I got back into live dance visuals, experimenting with replicating old-skool video feedback in ArKaos VJ3.5. This was before they moved to OpenGL and lost their lovely software-based effects. The original engine had an awesome Larsen effect, which when placed on the bottom layer could feed back on the whole stack of other keyed image and effect layers, with beautiful box filters to get that analog feel.

Best of all, the Larsen effect had full MIDI expression control over x and y scale and offset plus z rotation. I used it with triggered seed images, layered with ripple and warp effects, audio level control for waveform effects, and dissolve levels for seed layers. These parameters were mapped to two foot pedals, two touch pads, and a 3-axis joystick. It was like flying some kind of freakin' psychedelic wormhole surfing spaceship.

This clip was extracted from a solid 2 hour VJ set recorded live to DVD-R in 2005. I used nothing but Hubble space telescope images and cathedral rose windows as seed images. No video loops here, baby!
