INVITATION PRESS PREVIEW

Save the date: INVITATION TO PRESS PREVIEW

29 August 2024, 8pm

Genius Loci Weimar and the Buchenwald Memorial invite you to the PRE-OPENING OF THE 11th GENIUS LOCI WEIMAR FESTIVAL FOR VIDEOMAPPING AND MEDIA ARCHITECTURE

The 11th edition of the Genius Loci Weimar Festival for Videomapping and Media Architecture will take place for the first time in Buchenwald from 30 August to 1 September 2024:

International groups of artists will use their audio, light and video installations to illuminate the architecture and elements of the memorial, which was erected in 1958 as a national monument of the GDR near the mass graves of the Buchenwald concentration camp on the southern slope of the Ettersberg. One of the tasks of the competition was to allow the fates and events that the memorial does not commemorate to appear in the projections. The mass graves themselves and the group of figures by Fritz Cremer were excluded from the competition.

On the weekend of the festival, state elections will be held in Thuringia and Saxony. Not only there, but also in Germany and worldwide, shrill populism and misanthropic extremism are on the rise. The Buchenwald Memorial, Genius Loci, the City of Weimar and the Free State of Thuringia are not entirely unaffected by these social and political events and are sending out a clear message from this historic site that the past must not be forgotten for the sake of a better future.

We cordially invite you to the press preview on 29 August 2024 at 20:00 in the conference house (Tagungshaus) at the Memorial. There will be an opportunity to preview the projections, including a guided tour, and get an insight into the festival before the official opening. Please register at presse@genius-loci-weimar.org.

Artists from all over the world were invited to take part in the competition, which carries a prize of 30.000 euros. More than 100 works from 22 countries were submitted under the theme "It feels like 5 to 33". The three competition venues are the Stelenweg, the Straße der Nationen and the Glockenturm.

The Italian group mammasONica/IT/Catania will be staging their work "Ghostpoets" on the Stelenweg. There are seven stelae in all, symbolising the seven-year history of Buchenwald. Each projection will highlight a different aspect of the life and suffering of the inmates - and also show what the stelae do not say.

Area Composer from Düsseldorf/D illuminate the street of nations. In their work "EMPATHY", they use a multi-channel soundscape and their "liquid image" to transform images and impressions from Buchenwald, which flow into one another, into a human path of fate.

Marina Konther/F performs in the bell tower together with sound designer Martin Etienne /F.

"Die Stille", based on the poem of the same name by Rainer Maria Rilke, tells of man's longing for love in a world that makes it impossible through exclusion and war. They use traditional animation techniques with sand, paper and clay.
