I’M_FINE: Real Time Performance

I'M_FINE: Real Time Performance from Anna Ren on Vimeo.

“I’M FINE” is an immersive real-time performance that delves into the exploration of personal identity. In this piece, the performer sits before a monitor that mirrors every movement they make. While the performer outwardly maintains a facade of being "fine," the monitor reveals a deeper narrative, showcasing an inner self that has already experienced a series of breakdowns and deconstructions. This visual progression mirrors the tumultuous journey of everyone's inner ego.

The backdrop features projection mapping technology, enhancing the performance with a curtain that serves both as a fluid and evocative element, aligning with the introspective nature of the show. As the VJ of the performance, Anna actively manipulated the visuals in real-time using a set of triggers in Unreal Engine and TouchDesigner, using a variety of shaders and post-processing effects to vividly bring out the chaos and fragmentation of the inner self.

Audience participation is integral to "I’M FINE." Spectators are provided with the prompt, "In your gaze, her existence," which they are encouraged to contemplate throughout the performance. This transforms them into active observers, whose role is to maintain their character by engaging deeply with the unfolding narrative.

Artist: Anna Ren, Erika Xiang, Yizhen Xiang.

Um-par

Um-par from Arm on Vimeo.

Meeting, Union, Synthesis and Fusion.

In Um-par the simultaneous composition of the audible and the visible – and their occurrence in unity–, ensures that there is no precedence or hierarchy between sound and visuals. Like in life, which happens (a)cyclically – from circadian to atomic cycles –, two masses of sound and light are placed in (a)cyclic and (a)symmetric movements. An original computational system controls the additive – simultaneous – synthesis of color and sound.

DE FEO, born in 1995 in Naples is an Italian Dj, sound designer and visual artist based in Berlin. With experience with soundtracks, events and media communication in cities like Amsterdam, London, Belgrade, Barcelona, Berlin and many more, he is part of a generation of artists who work intensively in the transitional area between music, art and science.

His knowledge of communication mixes with skills in new media art to perfectly meet his need to convey to his listeners not only the right sound, but a unique collective experience, transporting them to different places with the use of samples created or recorded on his long journeys.

In his work he seeks to overcome the separation of the sensory perceptions of man made sound and light frequencies, or the difference between the various anthropological communication system. Creating scientific, artistic and sociological phenomenons perceivable for both eyes and ears in a multisensory and unexpected environment is his main goal.

His music is regularly supported by names such as: Richie Hawtin, Paco Osuna, Ilario Alicante, Young Male, Florian Meindl, and many more! For DE FEO, making music is not simply about producing sound,
but about transporting people into a boundless experience.

JPF_Voltage2_03.mp4

JPF_Voltage2_03.mp4 from Jana Pavla Francová on Vimeo.

Voltage 2.0 is a collaboration of Berlin-based musician, audiovisual artist and art director Lenka Kocisova, visual artist and educator Jana Francova and dancers and choreographers Marlene Kahl, Canay Sevgim, from collective collapsetofraction and Marketa Kuttnerova, Magdalena Junkova and Jolana Sturmova, from Czech republic. This video was recorded at the premiere at Berlin’s gallery Vierte Welt in March 2022. In April we repeated performance in gallery NGO DEI in Prague.
Experimental video is focusing on the parallels between micro and macro state of mind in order to create a nonhuman perspective. Artist Jana Francova chooses visuals from actual scientific resources of natural science (microscope) and astrophysics research. By switching the points of view, the viewer can learn to interpret our existence in broader perspective. Akkamiau (Lenka Kočišová), who works with human emotional sounds, makes sound and their interpretation generated by deep neural networks - an artificial intelligence self learning technology. The visuals arekindly provided by scientist Pavel Payne from CEITEC.

Langlee - Pixel-Aged

Langlee - Pixel-Aged from Lee Davitt on Vimeo.

Based on the deconstruction of video games in the 1970’s and their rise to popularity in the 1980’s, Pixel-Aged is a sociological paradigm of how the rise of home computing and video gaming came into fruition in this decade. This live performance aims to bring the viewer on a journey through time, starting with the most basic singular pixelated graphics and 1-bit sonic samples, and gradually move toward a more technologically advanced and digital age. This is done through the progressive introduction of visual movement and colour opacity, synthesizers and drum machines, fluxional graphics, colour mixing, and polyphonic voicing.

NEXT VJ content creation technique.
VJ-ing is changing!
Augmented reality audiovisual performance.

This performance was part of a donation campaign, organized to raise awareness for music school renovation.

As artists, we wanted to inspire people to be fearless and experiment with talents, to bring peoples' thoughts to another realm, where magic can happen right in front of your eyes. Let the sound lead you through space! We believe this is how sounds today.

Classical VJ-ing is transforming into new fully interactive visuals, where the performer and all his surroundings (floor, walls, etc.) are captured in 3D. Now spatial capture is possible with the stereo and depth cameras like a (ZED, Kinect, Realsense, etc.) This generative nature makes visuals unique.
With the help of this data, we can now play with physics, for example, where objects are colliding with the environment and we can detect the direction of the light to match it with the digital lights and to compose a more realistic image.

Of course, the most important part is the graphical engine. Unreal Engine makes all this possible having all the needed features built into it (UE4).

Poema:
Cómo te lo digo.

Eso. Mis huesos delgados de nácar
crujen al tempo
del rocío de mis senos
de néctar sobre mis labios.
¡Cómo te lo digo!
Rivadavia rompe en mi pecho,
cruje en mis sabanas de paz
sobre mi espalda, misericordia dormida.

Transito un parque, mi vida.
Telar de versos sin puntada
camuflaje de otoños en tu mar
puñal de tiempo en mis sienes
poesía monstruosa, ardiente.
Psicología vulgar! Culpable
infecciosa, feminista, suave
de segunda mano,
llave
que abre.

Atmosphere

Atmosphere from Maria Wiener on Vimeo.

“AtmoSphere” by Acronym - Maria Wiener

“Is it possible for a Live Performer to dance with a Virtual Partner? The reply to this question is explicitly shown in “AtmoSphere”, in which New Technologies are submitted to the commands of Creative Imagination” (Eleftherotypia, 4/12/2003).

AtmoSphere, an innovative cutting edge work, combines Contemporary Dance with New Technologies. It is a 30 minute-dance performance presenting an improvisational dialogue of a Live Performer with Virtual Partners. These partners are 3D animated figures derived from the technique of Motion Capture, generating their movements in real time from pre-recorded data of the live performer.

In AtmoSphere the live performer improvises with a series of 3D animation figures derived from his own movement, which in one sense constitute abstracted and humanized images of himself. Each Virtual Partner is a different version of the live Performer, a different challenge and inspiration for him, aiming to dance and improvise with him.

Behind the projected virtual figures are two VJs, who through project specific software, are enabled to manipulate the virtual characters and respond to the live performer’s movement, or rather co-dance with the live performer, thereby creating a 3 way improvisational performance.

The dialogue between the live performer and his virtual partners, however, progresses to a 5-way improvisation; As it travels through the four elements: Earth, Water, Fire and Air, it dynamically develops with the sounds and music from a DJ and the lighting states from a Lighting Designer into a ‘jamming symphony’.

While this is happening the DJ and Lighting Designer are equally free to adjust their improvisation to the rhythm of any of the other improvisers and to choose to alter the ‘atmosphere’ at any point during the performance.

Within this ‘unsafe’ environment the synergy of dance, sound, music, lights and new technology leads in “AtmoSphere” to unpredictable and unrepeatable results. The aim is to continually stimulate the audience’s attention by keeping it on the edge. Each performance of “AtmoSphere” is an impulsive trip, testing the intuition of the performing team and offering to the audience a unique experience.

In AtmoSphere the Motion Capture hardware and software is Motion Analysis by Motion Analysis Inc.

Acronym was created by Maria Wiener in 2000. AtmoSphere 1, the latest project of Acronym, exposed new avenues in the presentation of a joined choreography between live and virtual performers through a project specific VJ software. The idea was that the projections were not fulfilling a decorative role within the performance but were active co-performers in the live choreography.
