A small particle, but able to give rise to all forms of light: the photon is the smallest and brightest fragment of the universe, of microscopic dimensions but of enormous and multiform creative power.
And it is precisely from this concept that the first edition of FOTONICA was born, from 1 to 9 December 2017 at the MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome.
Designed by the network of organizations active over the years in Rome in the audio video industry, FOTONICA is a festival that wants to explore the art forms related to the light element in the contemporary context. To consolidate the practice of networking and make system in the field of artistic investigation among the most important of the contemporary.
The initiative is part of the program of Contemporaneamente Roma 2017 promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Crescita Culturale e Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali and in collaboration with Siae.
A unique festival in the capitol panorama that boasts a rich program: 27 artists give shape to the most diverse facets of Audio Visual Digital Arts and make them accessible to an ever-wider public.
The heart of the project is the audio video performance in collaboration with Live Cinema Festival: from the hypnotic abstraction that recalls topological and psycho-physical views of Luma [variations] 2017, the AV performance of the duo XX + XY visuals and sound art project (Sladzana Bogeska and Giuseppe Pradella) to the evocative and sophisticated journey of the digital artist Giuseppe Guariniello aka Mutech with Sound of the Spheres, where the rework of NASA audio and video fragments related to the mysterious sounds that have heard Apollo 10 astronauts on their moon landing creates an immersive environment, altering perception and immersing the audience in another space-time dimension. And then the mix between the electronic music of Marco Malasomma and the generative visual art of BinaryCodedBrain in JURA, dedicated to the silent island and far from the society where Orwell concluded the writing of ‘1984’. Up to the Live Cyborg Performance by Mr. Everett, “escorted” by Mr. Fox and Mr. Bear, his animal counterparts, and in constant dialogue with Mr. Owl , its human counterpart.
Thanks to the collaboration with RGB Light Experience, instead, FOTONICA will present the ancient and fascinating story of Diego Labonia‘s Arcobalenide and the intriguing tension of Costrizione 01 by Simone Palma, two light installations that become real environmental works to admire but above all to cross physically.
In the foyer of MACRO, two videomapping works are formed: Vj Luper and J-Cibong Waste-o-Polis, a futuristic city made up of polystyrene packaging that is animated by the mapping of the silhouettes of the objects they contain and which, mixing real images with geometric effects and dream animations, wants to raise awareness of the importance of good recycling and reuse practices; and Portami Via of NEOCORTEX PROJECT, an installation that focuses on the use of bicycles in the city, where the viewer can hold in his hands a dumbbell placed in front of a monitor and begin the change of scenery in front of him, between lights and color games.
On the front of NetArt, organized in collaboration with Shockart.net, works created from the creative manipulation of programming data. The Dyne, Data portraits installation is based on this, as well as Analyticz Visual Hacking created by Rufa – Rome University of Fine Arts. Thanks to a video installation, you can also interactively interact with the Shockart virtual gallery and explore all the Shockart.net web art exhibitions from 1999 to 2005.
Inside FOTONICA, there are also the dj set by Andrea Esu (Spring Attitude) and Orree (Strati) side by side in the video video from VJ Set by J-Cibong, Liz, Takehiko and Videosolid by LPM Live Performers Meeting.
FOTONICA has then devised a large space dedicated to the theoretical and practical approach of the world of audio-video and digital art thanks to the lectures held by Art is Open Source and Urban Experience, workshops on themes and instruments concern the digital and visual arts with Fusolab 2.0 and IED Roma and the children’s laboratories of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, which aim to bring the youngest into digital culture through creative tools and stimuli.
All workshops are free, reservation is requested at workshops@fotonicafestival.com.

With the occasion of a festival dedicated to the Internet culture, Francis Flux presents the performance ‘Sitting with our own demons’ at The Fictional School, a project by The School Hasselt, BE.
The piece is conceived as a Body Electronic Improvisation Jam, performed by three VJs, one live electronic act and three dancers. A site specific work that leads to an immersive experience of overlapping layers of images, sounds and movements performed in the abandoned Server Room of the former Court House of Hasselt, Belgium.

With US companies and agencies under constant attack from state-sponsored Chinese hackers, it is only a matter of time before tensions boil over and more sensitive infrastructure is targeted. “Sacred Geometry” is a video mapping developed for Lille Mapping Contest. The idea of the mapping is based on the concept of “Time door”, it's a time travel in to the ancient cultures. The narrative of the mapping works with the concepts, symbology and elements of those cultures, working with traditional knowledge, occultism philosophy and sacred geometry.
For the Sacred Geometry mapping, we are going to make an research on the work of mathematicians and important philosophers of the history and the development of geometrical theories, as Pythagoras, Hermes, Leonardo da Vinci and many others.

This summer Sila Sveta collaborated with True Light Crew to prepare the main stage at Signal, an experimental festival of music and architecture in Nikola-Lenivets. This huge light cube included LED screens, diode grids, light equipment, and, of course, our signature projections along the perimeter. All these mediums could be seen from any angle. For even more drastic effect we added some smoke machines and some powerfull beams that sent signals right to the space. This would be impossible without our partners: Stealth, Light Logic и UnionPRO. Thanks!

Entimology, a project engaged with language and swarm mentality, is an exercise of multi-modal
translation: translation of bodies into texts, texts into visions, social behaviours into symbolic forms, speech of insects into our speech and back. Which possibilities, Reality asks, the study of communication in insects, particularly those ones living socially, could bring into our understanding of connection between users in the digital domain? The duo approaches critically the idea of collective action, arguing instead that users are involved on the level of the individual, rather than collective, action frame.

[Set 1, 20 min.] Pensa––– improvvisazione suono-video sulle riprese delle escavazione del marmo bianco di Massa-Carrara.
La performance tenterà di usare l’anarchismo, una filosofia che trova radice nella storia di Carrara, come metodo creativo, usando le riprese dell’escavazione del marmo bianco di Carrara, che saranno montate dal vivo, come un primo tentativo di costruire un film. Suoni e immagini rifletteranno la relazione tra uomo e l’ambiente e il sacro e profano.
[Set 2, 20 min.] L'immagine sparita –––improvvisazione voce-video-suono sugli archivi della rivoluzione pacifica, Siria, 2011.
La performance propone un viaggio lirico e poetico all'interno degli archivi dimenticati della fase pacifica della rivoluzione siriana. In particolare, l'archivio personale dell'attivista pacifista Bassel Khartabil aka Safadi, scomparso nelle carceri siriane, offre l'occasione per un viaggio di parola, suono e musica dentro il rimosso del 2011, un anno che ha visto popoli del mondo intero ribellarsi contro ingiustizie e sfruttamenti. La performance è un omaggio agli attivisti pacifisti, e in particolare ai cittadini che, armati di videocamera o smartphone, hanno documentato, a rischio della propria vita, proteste, sit-in, e azioni di disobbedienza civile in Siria per tutto il 2011. Immagini rimosse o cancellate dai social media, ignorate dalla televisione mainstream, hanno segnato una fase della storia che rischia di essere dimenticata: a queste "immagini malgrado tutto", come le chiama il filosofo francese Didi-Huberman, la performance rende omaggio, attraverso un percorso lirico e poetico fatto di parole, suoni, e live video mixing.

Il quartetto Chincuales fonda nella pratica dell'improvvisazione collettiva il suo approccio al materiale sonoro, un flusso di forme estemporanee e ambienti sonori stratificati creato insieme da strumenti acustici, che interrogano la loro natura e la possibilità di essere altro da sé, e strumenti elettrici, che nelle loro infinite possibilità inseguono la forma. Un magma sonoro in cui canzoni preesistenti sopraggiungono e diventano “punteggiatura”, apparenti pause dal suono instabile, ma impregnate anch'esse in un viaggio sonoro imprevedibile ed

The crew takes part in main visual events in Poland and Europe. The crew was formed by Maciej Szupica (aka Monsieur Zupika) – Artistic Director of Interference Festival and Radek Deruba (aka Derubare), who is responsible for Vj Battle of Interference Festival. The crew: VJ 4L, Derubare, Monsieur Zupika, VJ Puh, VJ Prażyn, Łukasz Sztejna, VJ Rybskie. The common denominator of the team is Interference Festival in Gdańsk, PL and annual VJ Battle being one of the highlights of the festival.

This is a short montage of the animation content I created for the new Flyroam sneaker launch event for Timberland. The concept was very simple but huge fun to work on! It was to focus on the textures, surfaces and patterns of the new sneaker. Those being the heel, sole, leather and laces of the shoe. Any animations I made were VJ'd at the gig and projected onto the stage and architecture at the secret party near Tower Bridge in London. This was one of my favourite jobs so far to work on!

VJ FEST ISTANBUL 2012 "recoding for the real world"
The critics seems to argue that the visual arts events in Tarlabasi streets were neither resisting nor reclaiming anything. I disagree. These kinds of events get people together and open possibilities for touching real issues. They can be done anywhere. Of course, people must be there for a meaningful reason. What is a meaningful reason? My reason was to “distribute some sensibles” and show that these kinds of events are possible in Istanbul streets. Not everybody knows that.
