10TH GENIUS LOCI WEIMAR FESTIVAL FINISHED ON SUNDAY
After three successful summery days and nights, the 10th-anniversary edition of the facade projection festival GENIUS LOCI WEIMAR finished at midnight on Sunday. This year, for the first time, four facades of buildings were illuminated with five video projections. More than 60,000 visitors took to the streets of Weimar to finally explore the "genius loci", the spirit and history of the city's remarkable buildings.
A first audiovisual impression can be found here in the 2021 festival trailer.
The main attractions were the five video projections on four buildings: the old city castle Ensemble Bastille opened the festival, where the artists Tettenborn and Ross told the story of the maids Johanna Katharina Höhn beheading in 1783. The cinematic aesthetic was inspired by the expressionist film works of the 1920s. The Italian artist duo Gagliardi and Musca performed a powerful animation on the Marstall, which is linked to the visual worlds of Christopher Nolan. At the Goethe- und Schiller Archiv, an animation by the artists Seraji and Madreimova from Iran and Russia was shown. Its wonderfully poetic illustrations of Goethe's late work, the "West-Eastern Divan" were in stark contrast to the dramatic telling of Inside at Marstall. At the Altenburg, the former residence of Franz Liszt, two works were on display this time: a fascinating, technically brilliant abstract performance to the music of Franz Liszt by Flightgraf from Japan, followed by a story of the turbulent flight of the composer Richard Wagner from Dresden to Weimar, retold in impressively vivid illustrated imagery by Vanessa Cardui from Berlin.
The festival route was accompanied by Latlights, a luminescent construction developed for the festival, which magically illuminated the Ilm River at the dam on the Kegelbrücke, a forest path lovingly designed by Lichtplanung + from Kronach up to Jenaer Straße, and a facade projection by Logando from Leipzig. At the Erlebnisportal Weimar, saxophonist Moritz Köther played his compositions including four instruments created especially for the festival every hour. The route ended at the "Schillernde Lichtung" at the Platz der Demokratie, a party location with interactive video projections by Juladi Interactive and a curated short film program, where the enthusiastic visitors could happily end the festival with disco and downtempo beats by the DJanes Die Rote Dora, tatse, and Hyper Hugo

SYNOPSIS:
THIS IS NOT A TEST is not a test! During the 6thr extended CONVID19 totalitarian lockdown we initiated this spontaneous live stream via Twitch, Youtube and Facebook, Twitter using Restream.
This was a opportunity to experiment with midi signals sent remotely via the live Techno mix by local Melbourne artist Sharul Ariff.
The live mix was mastered on an ATMOS Shogun recorder, then taken into Premiere where mix was trimmed and slates added top and tail.
A rooki Zoom error saw Sharul's Ableton crash mid performance, but as a true pro Sharul continues the rest of perfomance using only his Juno synth, giving the overall mix a reflective atmosphere – which worked with the collection of Melbourne protest footage loops I used.
Stay tuned for further broadcasts. Remember, this definitely is not a test!

FOR THE 10TH INTERNATIONAL VIDEOMAPPING AND MEDIA ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL GENIUS LOCI WEIMAR
24.-26. SEPTEMBER 2021
National, as well as international artists, will bathe the city of Weimar in spectacular lights, once again. This year with two annual themes, four buildings that are being mapped, and five winning installations.
In its 10th edition, the GLW presents not only one, but two topics. For the first time, it exhibits five artworks illuminating four buildings. The winning productions from 2020, referring to its topic “Hubris & High Culture” and this year's works on “True Crime” will be showcased.
Starting at the Bastille, a truly historic piece representing Weimar's principality, the tour begins at the likely prison of the young maid and child murderess Johanna Catharina Höhn, who was beheaded for her crime. This story is being told by John Tettenborn and Kourtney Ross.
The tour then continues around the southern facade of the baroque city palace, to the Marstall with its former Gestapo-dungeons. Here, the artists Vincenzo Gagliardi and Emanuele Musca attempt a closer look at the memories of the Marstall, a building that has a mixed past from its brilliance in the neo-renaissance and today, to the miserable role it played during the National Socialism and the hardships socialist Germany was confronted with.
Up at the Altenburg Franz Liszt hid the young Richard Wagner who was sought by warrant in Saxony, declaring him a revolutionist, terrorist and subversive being after the attempted uprising in Mai 1849. The audio-visual duo Flightgraf illuminates the building wishing to turn attention towards the improvised “invisible sound” by creating artwork with randomized, incidental components – as a tribute to the legendary concerts of Franz Liszt, who often inserted improvised excursions into his live performances. The second artwork illuminating the Altenburg, created by Vanessa Cardui, sketches memories of the past with a red ribbon: The bloody riots from the march revolution as well as the pursuit of freedom and unity which motivated the revolution are put into animated graphic illustrations. Due to the social distance regulations, the projections from the Altenburg will be shown on a screen at Kegelplatz.
The final main installation is at the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv, here the work of the animation- and video artists from Iran and Russia, Soheil Seraji and Nadira Madreimova will be premiering. It re-imagines the thoughts of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's poetry collection “West-östlichen Diwans”, resulting in a poetic visual animation-video.
Beyond the main attractions, an arrangement of Side Installations accompanies the festival route and gives a gripping insight to the wide-ranging scene of (illuminating) art of the region and yonder.
On the Saturday of the Festival, the Genius Loci Talk takes place at the Reithaus Weimar. Here, international experts with varying backgrounds will give lectures and have discussions on the topic of Propaganda and public space, seeking interaction with the audience. The Genius Loci Lab and the mysterious ‚Schillernde Lichtung' will draw you to the Platz der Demokratie. Short films, visual live performances, and DJ-Sets of the Schiller-Disco await you here, as well as other surprises!
The Genius Loci Festival will start on Friday, September 24th, 2021 at 20:00. The Videomapping shows will be repeated regularly, the last show starts at 00:00. You are required to wear a medical mask in the festival area.

SYNOPSIS:
THIS IS NOT A TEST is not a test! During the 6thr CONVID19 totalitarian lockdown we initiated this spontaneous live stream via Twitch, Youtube and Facebook using Restream.
This was a opportunity to experiment with a custom designed TouchOSC interface to control parameters in Resolume. This jam was framed against the live Techno mix by local Melbourne artist Sharul Ariff. This was also the unofficial introduction of our creative collaborative relationship title i.e. the Muzzy Bros.
The live mix was mastered on an ATMOS Shogun recorder, then taken into Premiere where mix was trimmed and slates added top and tail and audio restriped from a master recording using Redux.
For reasons unkown, Sharul's audio in the live stream cut out for approximately 4 mins approximately 24min into jam. We suspect our VLC handshake broke.
Stay tuned for further broadcasts. Remember, this definitely is not a test!

Großprojektionen im öffentlichen Raum – progressive Stadtkultur oder historische Verklärung im digitalem Gewand?
'Propaganda und öffentlicher Raum' ist das Thema unseres diesjährigen Genius Loci Talks. Wir wollen die Wirkmächtigkeit und den damit einhergehenden verantwortungsvollen Umgang beim Einsatz dieser neuen, populären Kunstform hinterfragen.
Wir möchten Sie ganz herzlich zum Genius Loci Talk am Samstag, den 25. September 2021von 12-18 Uhr im Reithaus Weimar einladen. Das Reithaus befindet sich im Park an der Ilm, Höhe Platz der Demokratie.
Propaganda und öffentlicher Raum
500 Jahre Bibelübersetzung, 100 Jahre Weimarer Verfassung, 30 Jahre Mauerfall – In Großprojektionen werden zunehmend geschichtliche und gesellschaftliche Kontexte und Jubiläen aufgegriffen und in kurzen, bildstarken Inszenierungen reflektiert. Der öffentliche Raum wird mittels moderner Medien, überwältigend in Form und Ästhetik inszeniert. Er wird so zum Träger eines historischen Narrativs, das die wahren Begebenheiten und Hintergründe regelmäßig nur sehr verkürzt darstellt. Wo hört hier Kunst auf und wo beginnt Propaganda?
