Cr[e]ate Digging - Remix Culture

Cr[e]ate Digging - Remix Culture from Iain Edgar on Vimeo.

This multi-media VJ performance was part of my REMIX:culture class at CU Boulder. I was lucky enough to be taught by none other than the mighty cyber remixer Mark Amerika. Remixing and manipulating the rational is very important in my work, and this particular performance embodies it.

The screen you are seeing in the video is huge. We were able to get into the Black Box room located on CU Boulder's campus and utilize the space for all forms of creative expression.

"Cr[e]ate Digger" as the performance was referred to, uses source video from very early Mac, Linux, and Windows computer commercials. These were placed into the well-known VJ software VDMX (forgive the worn effects, this was when I first found out about the program) and manipulated via a midi board. Likewise, Abelton Live 8 was being controlled by the same midi board (through the use of OSCilltor) while playing a very dissociative electronic song. Whenever I turned a knob on the midi controller, not only would the song be distorted/delayed/revered but the video from VDMX would be manipulated as well.

All in all, I wanted to push the dissociative limits of the viewers vision and hearing while showcasing the fact that in the years since these commercials have come out we have come far enough in computer electronics to where I am able to push these viewers cerebral limits.
