Stift Herzogenburg - Projection Mapping

Stift Herzogenburg - Projection Mapping from Jascha Suess on Vimeo.

As a project for my bachelor thesis "Projection Mapping Workflows with Photogrammetry" I created a projection mapping onto a wall of to the Monestary Herzogenburg. The aim was to create a photogrammetry model in order to use it as a reference object in 3D software. Furthermore, I wanted to see if you can use the photogrammetry model itself for content creation. All the content seen was created directly on the photogrammetry model in Cinema 4D. Because of the organic, rough surface of the raw photogrammetry output, I decided to use this as a stylistic element. When rendered with the "Sketch and Toon" C4D renderer and the "Toon Renderer" in Octane, the geometry gets a hand drawn look which worked really well with the complex surface. I also used some Cinema 4D shader displacement to distort the geometry.
By aligning the virtual camera with the projectors position the mapping was done for the most part. Little corrections where made in Resolume arena, which was used as a media server.
The end result was satisfying, although I am still trying to figure out a better way to do the mapping. Instead of perspective matching the camera with the projector, a possible way would to it via a UV map and actually mapping the 3D object in software like Touchdesigner.
