AT THE START OF THE 11TH GENIUS LOCI WEIMAR FESTIVAL FOR VIDEO MAPPING
AND MEDIA ARCHITECTURE
30 August - 01 September 2024
The international festival for video mapping and media architecture Genius Loci Weimar starts this weekend. An international competition was also announced this year in spring. Not entirely unaffected by current political and social developments, this year the Buchenwald Memorial and its architecture were called out under the title ‘It feels like 5 to 33’.
This year, over one hundred works from 22 different countries were submitted by video and media artists from all over the world on this theme. The three projections will be projected onto the facades of the venues from 20:00 to 01:00 on the three days of the festival.
The festival route begins with a production by mammasONica/IT at the seven relief steles, each of which represents a year of the camp. The route continues along the Street of Nations, which connects the three ring graves, with projections on the 18 pylons, illuminated by Area Composer/D. This is followed by the 50 metre high bell tower, on which visitors can expect a large light installation by Marina Konther and Martin Etienne/F. Further light and video installations complete the festival route.
This year's Genius Loci Festival is dedicated to a special and sensitive location. The focus is on the careful handling of this place of remembrance, commemoration and warning. The three installations that will be presented this year have been designed in prudent harmony with the history and dignity of this place. They are intended to honour the memory of the victims and to help us not to lose sight of the critical view of the present and current developments by looking into the past.
Visitors can experience impressive installations at the Buchenwald Memorial free of charge. The museum on the history of the Buchenwald Memorial will also be open during the festival and accessible to all.
There are car parks at the memorial as well as bus and car parking spaces at the Buchenwald Memorial, although these are limited. We therefore recommend that you form car pools or use our free bus service. There is a special bus service for this year's event which will run on the days of the event. From the centre of Weimar (Goetheplatz and the main railway station), buses will run directly to the venue every 15 minutes from 8.00 pm. More details on our website.
Unfortunately, the site is not fully accessible for people with disabilities. If you register at orga@genius-loci-weimar.org, we can provide joint access to the event.
Further information about the festival can be found on the Genius Loci Weimar website: www.genius-loci-weimar.org/de
Genius Loci Weimar is organised by the festival organisation MXPerience gUG, this time in cooperation with the Buchenwald Memorial, the State of Thuringia, the City of Culture Weimar, Weimar Summer, ReBeam, Logando, Stadtwerke Weimar and Sparkasse Mittelthüringen. The international festival for audiovisual projections GENIUS LOCI WEIMAR was launched in 2012 as part of the Weimar Summer initiative. Over 50,000 visitors now flock to Weimar every year to experience the festival weekend. Ideally located in the city of poets, musicians and thinkers, the festival has become an important cultural event for Thuringia.
